1st April is widely celebrated as April Fool’s Day and most of us like to celebrate it by playing humorous pranks on our friends and family. Well, the day is not being celebrated since the time Jesus was alive. In this article, we are going to tell you about the creation of April Fool’s Day and where and why it originated!
April Fool’s Day is not a holiday but is still celebrated overall in the world. It is not a day exclusive to the English speaking countries only. It is commemorated by people of all colors and heritage, speaking different languages.
It’s History
There are many stories on how the day originated. Some say that it originated from copying errors in the existing manuscripts of the Canterbury Tales of Chaucer. There were also stories of a nobleman giving foolish errands to his servants on this particular day. A number of people were actually tricked to go to the London Tower and see the Washing of Lions on April 1, 1998.
Just imagine how they must have felt when they realized that they were tricked into it. Even Iranians play tricks on one another in the second week of Nowruz, which could be around the first or second week of April in the Gregorian Calendar.
The Filipinos were introduced to April Fool’s Day by the British in around 1762. In Poland, the day is celebrated with plenty of jokes, with even the media taking full advantage of the day spreading hoaxes.
The term for the particular day in Scotland is Hunt-the-Gowk-Day. The word Gowk is the Scottish word for a daft person or a cuckoo. Good Humor is really necessary in today’s world and the day certainly doesn’t lack in providing such. It is a good day for harmless pranks.
