The 35-year-old MC Mary Kom punched a hole in the history of boxing. She climbed the Olympian steps to boxing immortality on Saturday. By claiming her sixth world title, Mary Kom became the most successful woman boxer in history. She beat Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota, 22, in a unanimous 5-0 verdict in the 48 kg category summit bout.

MC Mary Kom is a mother of three. She won her maiden gold medal way back in 2002. When Mary won the World Championship in 2002, her Ukrainian rival was just six years old. In that period, Facebook, Gmail and iPhones were yet to enter the global sphere. In that pre-social media age, she started her ascendence. And that ascendence has not stopped yet. Dhoni was a couple of years away from his India debut in that year. Delhi was yet to get a metro.

That puts things into perspective, showcasing the long and gruelling journey that she underwent. She said, “I don’t have anything to give except for a gold to my country. I dedicate this gold to the nation. Because of your love and support, I feel I will be able to qualify for 2020 Tokyo. I was not able to qualify for Rio. I am still hurting because of that.”

Later, between tears, Mary Kom said that she had fulfilled her duty.

“After winning, she just lay down, weight of the world lifted from her shoulders,” said Indian team coach Raffaele Bergamasco. He added, “For me, she is the Maradona of boxing.” No one had asked her to push herself beyond her limits. No one had told her to bring another gold. But she was as stubborn as they come. She took it upon herself to go into the fray and win the gold once again.
