What could you expect from a typical ‘Rajnikanth’ film? Claptrap repertoire and the soaring dialogues obviously. But this film ‘Kaala’ which is directed by Pa Ranjith is rich in coherence and logic unlike the actor’s last release in ‘Kabaali’. The acting is character based and the movie has dialogues which are the perfect blend of ‘dialoguebaazi’ and the ‘true logic’. The story of the movie is not anything new but the makers have constructed the art of story-telling with finesse. Rajnikanth plays a saviour in the slums of Dharavi, Mumbai for his people. The villains here are the greedy builders for whom money is undoubtedly more meaningful than the lives of innocent people of the slum.

The builders and politicians have no moral values and they want a land for some lucrative project. The land which they want belongs to people of the slum which is only the place where slum people can reside in the whole city. Kaala is the moniker of Rajnikanth in the movie who conveys some straightforward ideas telling that fake secularism would not do any good to the human in general. Huma Qureshi is little disappointing as an ex-lover but the other side-characters have left really hard and convincing impression.

The standout character that will win your heart is that on Nana Patekar. He plays the intricate part of a politician who looks as simple as it can get but has demonic thoughts inside. The only flipside of the movie is its screen time. If it has been edited tighter, then the movie would have been better. But the action scene involving an umbrella, which is also a climax scene eclipsed minor problem in an otherwise successfully made film. If you are a Rajnikanth fan, then this film is an ample bang for your buck. Do go an watch the actor in a different but a reasonable role.
