Bollywood has today established a new genre called ‘sports films with underdog stories’ which are doing great good at contemporary times. The movie Gold is one such film. The movie is released at the exact time when Indian audience needs a patriotic dose. The movie Gold is a film in which the playing field is a ground to take revenge from Britishers who have done us wrong for 200 years. Reema Kagti tells the story of a Hockey player with straightforward yet impressive manner. The base of the movie is India’s victory in 1948 in Olympics when India participated as an Independent country for the very first time.

On the flipside, the movie is unnecessarily long. A tighter edit would have made this flick better. Characters in the movie are clearly defined and they have done full justice to their roles. Kunal Kapoor as a legendary player turned into a coach, Amit Saadh as a royal, a Hockey player from village played by Sunny Kaushal and the main lead of the film Akshay Kumar who portrayed the role of Tapan Das. However, in many places, Akshay Kumar is the weak link in the movie. The main reason behind this is because he was unable to pull the Bengali accent which is clearly visible in the movie. His wife, played by Mouni Roy is also wasted. She is a weakly written character who has nothing much to do in the movie Gold.

There are some dull stretches in the flick but the narrative of the film holds the movie and does not let it falter at any place. The other standout thing in the movie is the period details which are amazingly on point. There are many politics like team politics, federation politics etc shown in the movie. Akshay’s frustration and problems are not heart-touching and so this is another flaw in the flick. However, when finally India wins and the National Anthem blares, the faults of the movie Gold are wisely and obviously eclipsed.
