Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is a revolutionary attempt at filmmaking. It is a completely different issue that it fails to create anything revolutionary.
Debutant director Shelly Chopra Dhar made this revolutionary attempt at filmmaking. The movies hail itself as the first commercial Indian movie to have the same-sex relationship at the centre of its storyline. Sweety played by Sonam Kapoor is an introvert who has to make her peace with her over the top Punjabi family. A family intent on seeing her married to a guy played by Rajkumar Rao who is smitten by her. However, in a twist that is unprecedented in Bollywood, Sweety is a lesbian who is love with another girl. It is this plot point that makes this movie a revolutionary attempt at filmmaking.
However, the fact that same-sex intimacy is never properly shown to keep the movie comfortable is a shame. The tackling of the subject matter is dignified and nowhere near bold. The movie focuses more on every relationship other than that of the two lesbian lovers. It’s a failure to be bold and unapologetic about its unique topic is what makes the movie a revolutionary attempt at filmmaking and not a revolutionary movie.
The songs are exceptionally good and fit quite nicely. They do the movie justice at every point in time. The movie features the father-daughter duo of Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. This had been one of the major selling points of the movie and it does not fail to impress. Anil Kapoor had given us some if the best acting of his career. Juhi Chawla gives is exceptional in all those light moments that make the movie lovely. However, the one actor that left his mark is Rajkumar Rao. The actor had never failed to disappoint and had maintained his streak. Not only this, each and every supporting actor plays his or her role with utmost conviction.
The movie is worth watching solely because if it’s the revolutionary attempt at filmmaking. If that is not enough for you, then go for a movie where you everyone has given their best. Ek Ladki Ki Dekha Toh Aisa Laga is a movie where everyone has given their best.
