After 11 years since the first Chandrayan was launched into space, Indian scientists and ISRO has decided to launch the Chandrayan 2. The launch will take place on the 15th of July and one thing is certain. If anything, the successor is much better than Chandrayan 1. In this article, we will tell you about what will be the mission of Chandrayan 2 and how is it better than Chandrayan 1.
While Chandrayan 1 only orbited the moon from a distance of 100 Kms, Chandrayan 2 will be the first-ever spacecraft which will land on the southern part of the moon which is mineral-rich. The first mission to the moon cost a total of 375 crores. The Chandrayan 2 mission takes about 603 crores to complete the mission. This is almost double the cost. Also, the weight of Chandra Yan 2 is thrice than that of Chandrayan 1.
Amusing facts about the spacecraft is that the various components have been given Indian names and will not be known as just components. The Lander is known as Vikram while the Rover is called Pragyan.
Landing
Talking about the mission, once the spacecraft escapes Earth’s orbit, it will go on to cover a 3.84 million Km journey towards the moon. This will take approximately 4 days. Even then, it will not land directly. Chandrayan 2 will rotate around the moon for 30 days before the lander separates from the orbiter and descends towards the moon.
The total exercise will take about 52 days to complete. The rover can easily capture and send photos for over one year so be ready for some good quality photos of the moon.
One important thing to know is that the southern part of the moon is still unexplored by any country.
History in the Making
If it successfully lands on the surface of the moon, it would make India only the 4th country after Russia, the US and China to achieve such a feat.
