The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 ended with England as a winner. It was the first time since the beginning of the World Cup that England has held it. They had to wait 46 years before getting hands at the Cup. On 25th July, England vs Ireland test match began. People would never guess what happened as England came down to bat. The World Cup Champs got out even before hitting the 100 run mark. None of the batsmen were able to hit even 25 runs. Just, Denly was able to score 23 runs.
Ireland’s Murtagh took 5 wickets conceding just 13 runs. Mark Adair took 3 while Rankin took 2 wickets. Ireland came down to bat and got off to a good start. Andy Balbirnie scored 55 runs while Stirling scored 36. However, the middle order batsmen were not able to sustain English bowling and Ireland got bowled out at 207 runs. Still, they got a huge benefit over The World Cup Champs.
As England came down to bat their 2nd innings, opener jack leach took it upon himself to save England from an embarrassing loss. He scored 92 before getting out to Murtagh. Even in the second innings except for Leach, none of the other batsmen were able to reach even a score of 50 runs.
Ireland beating England is not the first instance. In World Cup 2011, we saw England giving Ireland a total of 354 which Ireland easily chased with a quick century from Kevin O Brien.
At the end of Day 2, England is 303-9, giving them a lead of 181 runs. Only Broad and Olly Stone are left to bat and might topple as Day 3 comes into action. The question is now will England lose to Ireland just after winning the World Cup?
Things will not be easy for England as they step down onto the ground on Day 3. If The World Cup Champs are able to pull off a victory from here, it just proves how good of a team they are!
