From the director of movies such as No One Killed Jessica, Aamir and not so likeable Ghanchakkar, Raj Kumar Gupta has again marked his presence with a great, entertaining and captivating film with Raid. Written by Ritesh Shah this surely an intriguing script that consists of some really fascinating characters and dialogue too. The film is a complete package as there are songs, twists, thrills and even has an action sequence which makes it perfect for the Indian audience. The protagonist tackles corruption with utmost candour, and his team dig up hidden assets in a humorous manner. The most fun part is when the money comes out from unusual sources which leave the viewers in surprise.
Amay Patnaik portrayed by Ajay Devgn is smoothly played and is relatable. He’s the model public servant with unshakeable principles and who worships his work. Most importantly he is the head of IT department in Lucknow in the year 1981. Saurabh Shukla portrays the main antagonist Tauji to perfection. He’s the typical Bollywood baahubali, a man who has both political and muscle power to topple any opponent. He is also gutsy enough to mock the IT official and also, challenges him that he will not find a single rupee during the search operation. Raid is the contrast and struggle which takes place between the use and misuse of power. The protagonist is the voice of righteousness while the villain is completely opposite of the former. Their struggle with one another makes it a captivating watch. But there are a few instances in the film which makes it too predictable. The second half is a bit overstretched.
Saurabh Shukla’s performance as Tauji is the best thing about the film. He brings in the necessary elements that a villain should have. Ajay Devgn does what he’s best at, the brooding body language, powerful dialogues which makes his performance look effortless. Ileana D’Cruz and Amit Sial also deliver satiating supporting performances as well. 85-year-old Pushpa Joshi as Tauji’s mother is extremely adorable.
Director Raj Kumar Gupta takes the movie in the correct direction. The final minutes are a little over the top but that could be ignored due to the stellar performances delivered. The music by Amit Trivedi and Tanishk Bagchi does feel avoidable at times. Raid in short a value for money movie, that has a unique take on the subject of Black Money and is a good one.
