In what can be an interesting turn of events Qualcomm has taken a decision to go back to Samsung for development of Snapdragon 865. The two companies took a hiatus in 2018 when Qualcomm contracted Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company to build the chipsets Snapdragon 845 and 855. In this article, we will tell you all there is to know about Qualcomm’s deal with Samsung.
The Snapdragon 865
The last chipsets Samsung made for Qualcomm were the Snapdragon 820 and the Snapdragon 835. Both companies then went their separate ways when in 2018 Qualcomm contacted TMSC for their flagship chipsets. Now, Qualcomm is coming back to Samsung reporting that Samsung has better and advanced technology than TMSC.
Samsung will be using the Ulta-Violet Process (EUV), to build the Snapdragon 865. The chipset will be built at 7nm, the smallest till date. The production for the chipsets is said to begin by the end of 2019. The Snapdragon 865 Chipset is expected to come in two variants: a standard version and another one equipped with the X55 5G chipset.
This will also be the first chipset built by Samsung for Qualcomm using the EUV process. Samsung has used the same process to build the Exynos chipset used in Samsung Note 10. The Exynos chipset will also be 7nm based.
Well, this deal between Samsung and Qualcomm isn’t final yet but according to report, the alliance has reached the final stage. Thus, this year it will be Samsung who will develop the flagship chip for Qualcomm instead for TMSC.
One thing which is for sure is that the EUV method used by Samsung to build the 7nm chipsets is the future of next-generation power processors. It is evident with the fact that IBM has also selected Samsung’s 7nm EUV foundries for next-gen processors.
TMSC, who seem to have lost Qualcomm as a client is reportedly working to build the Apple A13 chipset as well as the Kirin 985.
