One cannot argue against the fact that Gmail has changed the way people used e-mails. The mailing app in today’s world gives you free storage of 15 Gb and you can receive emails as big as upto 50 Mb’s. Google’s Gmail has nearly 1.5 billion users per month and it has only been 15 years since its launch. Wait for another 15 and you will get to see triple the numbers. When did it Launch?
Gmail was created by Paul Buchheit on April 1, 2004. Gmail started with an initial capacity of 1 Gb per user and now has the capacity of 15 Gb per user. Before Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail were used in vast numbers. Yahoo Mail has currently 228 million users a month. Some other small mailing apps which were displaced by Gmail are AOL Mail and Hotmail.
Well, it can also be said that Gmail brought a ton of good luck in the hands of Google. One year after launching Gmail, they launched Google Maps which is the leading map service on the web. After that Google also bought Youtube and Android which completely changed its financial position and has made it to what position it is currently in.
Till 2005, Gmail was only available as a website but on 2 November 2006, Google began offering a mobile-application based version of Gmail for mobile phones that were capable of running Java Applications.
On 28 January 2007, Google Docs and Spreadsheets were linked with Gmail providing the capacity to open attached Microsoft Word DOC files directly from the Gmail App.
Well, year by year Gmail has been improving tons and the experience keeps on getting smoother and better. In such a competitive and technological world we can’t imagine being without Gmail.
Current Development
In January Google released a new user interface for Gmail and recently a new Dark Theme has been teased by Google for the Gmail App for a long period of time. The new design will help users to quickly view attachments like photos without having to open or scroll through the entire conversation.
