Dolly Kitty aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, directed by none other than astounding Alankrita Srivastava, is another exercise to show the world that it is still damn difficult for a woman to live a life that makes her happy, despite hue and cry about women empowerment that is made on a daily basis somewhere or the other.
The fear of being judged and the social pressure to belong to a category of ‘politically correct people’ always stand as a hurdle and creates a conundrum whenever a woman tries to embrace what makes her truly content. Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare displays ‘woman emotion’ in the truest way.
The Actors Are The Uplifters Of The Movie
When sturdy actors with proven acting chops are cast for a story like this, fireworks are created. This is what Konkona Sen and Bhumi Pednekar have created on screen. The malleability that these actors possess of completely blending into the atmospherics of their characters have made this two-hour movie solid, relatable and palpable.
Bhumi Pednekar plays Kitty, a wide-eyed girl from a small town who shifts to a big city. She is an epitome of the phrase that freedom comes with responsibility and she learns tough realities of life the hard way. Dolly, on the other hand, is displayed as a happily married woman who has everything if seen from the outside but lacks love and affection which her inner soul craves. Her extramarital affair is one such part in the flick which blurs the line between right and wrong and leaves the audience in a complete grey zone. Dolly’s character is a little deeper than Kitty’s as Dolly discovers her hollowness of life when she tries to fit Kitty in societal norms. These are women who drink, smoke but still hide from each other to sound and appear ‘right’.
Summary
Acceptance and understanding are two key feelings that Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare has tried to show. The screenplay does become flat and a little stretchy at some places but the characters do not let the movie fall. The film will make you recall ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ world but does hold the freshness of a new story with the same messaging.
