Ban of Oxytocin. The Union Ministry of Health, from September 1, banned on the retail sale and private manufacturing of Oxytocin. The Drugs Technical Advisory Board gave recommendations against the ban of Oxytocin. Also, they told that the ban must lead to high drug prices and scarcity. Actually, Many veterinary Doctor concern is to regulate the overuse of the international units of Oxytocin.

Prakash Nadoor, a veterinary pharmacologist at Karnataka Veterinary, explains the situations for the use of Oxytocin. According to him, Farmer generally uses around 50-100 IUs of Oxytocin to inculcate labour in cattle. Also, the death of the calf, doses of Oxytocin given to produce milk from the dairy animals and not for long-term use.

Problems of Oxytocin Use

• Misuse of Oxytocin in cows to increase the production of milk, leads to many adverse consequences with the health of animals.
• Also, constantly use of Oxytocin doses made cattle barren and decreases their lifespans of the dairy animals.
• Most importantly, it leads to male impotency on constantly drinking Oxytocin treated cattle milk, early puberty among women and cancers is the general consequence of the overuse of Oxytocin.
• Synthetic Oxytocin contains hormones like gonadotropins, which has also ill consequences on the health of human being.
• Formation of the animal’s corpus luteum, an endocrine structure, which has an adverse effect on the pregnancy of the women.

  

National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) has studied the 2.5 and 5 IUs of Oxytocin for 90 days use in cattle. Mahendra Singh founded that there is no adverse effect on oestrous cycle of buffaloes and conceiving ability. Sometimes, due to untrained dairy farmers, high doses hurts animals and causes pain. As Punjab and Haryana use Oxytocin indiscriminately to the cattle.

So, Ban of Oxytocin is not satisfiable instead the proper surveillance required. Also, Oxytocin considered as the life-saving drug for new mothers.
