Court Halts Basketball Federation of India’s New League Tender Following Contract Breach Allegations

A Karnataka court has barred the Basketball Federation of India

The Karnataka court has barred the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) from pursuing further tenders for a professional league until June 10, 2024. This follows BFI’s recent issuance of a new tender on May 27, which allegedly breached its existing contract with Captains Professional Basketball League (CPBL).

BFI had previously awarded CPBL the tender to host national basketball matches and promote grassroots talent. However, on May 9, BFI approached the Delhi High Court, contending that CPBL was not authorized to host the INBL Pro exhibition match, despite CPBL’s contractually granted rights. The High Court ruled in CPBL’s favor, affirming its authority to host the event.

Subsequently, on May 27, BFI issued a new tender for the “technical & financial bid for Engagement of Organizing Partner for the execution of National Star Basketball 33 & 55 League,” despite CPBL’s ongoing contract. CPBL then sought judicial intervention, leading to the court’s interim order to halt the new tender process until the next hearing on June 10.

This legal victory is significant for CPBL, which has committed to investing over ₹300 crores in basketball over the next five years. The INBL Pro League aims to elevate basketball in India, inspired by the success of cricket’s Indian Premier League, by providing a platform for local and international talent.

Impact on Indian Basketball

The CPBL’s efforts through the INBL Pro League have been instrumental in promoting basketball at the grassroots level, unearthing new talent and fostering a competitive environment. The ongoing legal tussle underscores the challenges in managing and promoting professional sports leagues in India, reflecting broader issues within sports administration and governance.
