Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Sikkim on the 23rd of September, 2018. A senior official has reported that the purpose of his visit shall be to inaugurate the first airport of Sikkim, which shall be located in Pakyong and named the Pakyong airport.
After the formalities of the inauguration, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, will then reach St. Xavier’s school at Pakyong. On the school grounds, the Prime Minister will address a public meeting. Chief Secretary, AK Srivastava, after chairing a high-level meeting, revealed that Narendra Modi will return to New Delhi on the same day.
The greenfield airport is located 30km away from Gangtok. This truly is a historic moment for the state as it will put Sikkim on the aviation map of the country of India, and pretty soon; it shall become a recognizable airport, in the international aviation landscape.
This will be the honourable Prime Minister’s second visit to Sikkim. The Chief Secretary also said that the Pakyong Airport has already undergone trials two separate times in the month of March, this year.
He also said that the state government has been intimated by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the Union Civil Aviation Ministry about the Prime Minister’s visit and the Pakyong airport’s grand inauguration.
The chief secretary added that after the inauguration on 23rd September, commercial operations of flights from the Pakyong airport will commence in the first week of October.
This event shall usher in the age of rapid commercial development for the state.
