Binge-Watching Movies harming the environment?
Experts say that the ease of streaming provided by such sites comes with a hefty price tag for the environment. Watching a half-hour show would lead to emissions of 1.6 Kg of CO2 equivalent, said Maxime Efouihess. This would be the amount of Carbon Dioxide you would produce if you rode 6.28 Km in your car.
In the past few years, online streaming has seen a big boost even in India. With low internet prices and a small subscription fee, people are subscribing to streaming sites unknown to the fact that they are harming the environment.
Quantity of Emissions Produced
In 2018, the emissions produced were equivalent to Spain and experts say the amount may double in six years. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and some other major sites produce around 34% of the total emissions.
