Badhaai Ho- a movie close to reality with quite an unconventional subject and a brilliant execution. This movie is a gem as far as the world of cinema goes and by that, we do not mean just the Indian cinema. Yes, Badhaai Ho is a movie that is a benchmark for the entire world.

The main theme of this movie is pregnancy at old age and the inability of coming to terms with the fact that your parents had sex. However, this being a movie close to reality does not end its execution at this theme. Its portrayal of the Indian middle class is deep, tasteful and as close to reality as cinema can go.

The genre of the movie is comedy but the writer and director have gone to great extents to ensure that it is not just that one dimensional. It is rooted deep in reality; be it the costumes or the sets. The opening scenes have footwear casually flung at the door of what seems to be an authentic government quarters of a middle class family and that is when you know that this is not an over the top crass comedy but a movie close to reality. When you see Neena Gupta carrying a dupatta over her nightgown in front of people or the way Surekha Sikri reacts to the news of old daughter in law being pregnant is something that out of real life rather than a movie script.

Speaking of the movie script, it is really well written with comedy entailing a bit of depth to the story. It has got gems of dialogues like “Yeh bhi koi mummy papa ke karne ki cheez hai kya” referring to sex or when the old grandmother of the family says “ek thali se kha ke bina sex(y) kiye bachche paida ho jayenge kya?” It is a movie close to reality designed to make you laugh while touching a deeper cord.

Badhaai Ho is a rare amalgamation of unique concept and great execution. It has everything that a good film should have a great plot, well written script, brilliant acting and an amazing direction.
