The most awaited the most scrutinized and the most critical student union election, the DUSU elections were concluded on Wednesday. Amidst talks and allegations of hampered EVM machines, ABVP won three posts while NSUI won one.

The three posts that ABVP won are that of the president, vice president, and joint secretary. NSUI bagged the post of secretary. The most critical student union elections saw a 43.8 percent voter turnout which elected ABVP’s Ankiv Baisoya as the new president of the DUSU.

The votes registered across more than fifty polling booths also elected ABVP’s Shakti Singh and Jyoti as Vice President and Joint Secretary respectively while NSUI’s Akash Choudhary was elected the secretary.

DUSU elections, the most critical student union elections were as far away from controversy as they can be. The huge amount of money spent did raise eyebrows while the massive amount of flyers that littered the campuses were a continuous source of criticism even amongst the students.

The real controversy, however, came in the form of EVMs. The Chief Electoral Officer in Delhi has said that the EVMs used in the most critical student union elections were not issued by the Election Commission and were hence procured privately. This nugget of information raised several questions on the credibility of the machines, especially after counting had to be suspended for a few hours due to a glitch in the EVMs.

The DUSU elections have always been fought under the banner of the rivalry between ABVP and NSUI. These elections, however, saw an alliance of AISA and CYSS competing for a fair share fair of votes.

The most critical student union elections are often seen as a stepping stone towards mainstream politics. Arun Jaitley and Ajay Makan are two of the many prominent names in Indian politics that started their political careers from DUSU elections.

It is also ironical to note that Delhi University officially does not recognize any political outfit.
