Fully Lost Its Way During First Half: Movie Review Of Angrezi Medium
Angrezi Medium is a movie which in its very opening sequence describes a parent as a creature who has a strange ability to love its child unconditionally. Irfan Khan plays a sweet shop owner, Champak Lal in Udaipur. He is a single parent who is raising his daughter played by Radhika Madan. This father-daughter relationship is endearing. The scenes between them are authentic and real. It packs genuine punches of emotions.
A Movie Elevated By Rock Solid Ensemble Of Actors
Tarika, Champak’s daughter has always dreamt of studying abroad and when she lands a scholarship for the same, her father revokes it. This later fills Champak with great guilt. Propelled by the guilt of knowingly shattering his daughter’s dream, he decides to do anything and everything to send his daughter to an elite college abroad. This is a movie which s written by four writers and it has resulted in ‘spoiling the brawl’. There are subplots that are unnecessary and so till the interval, the flick is nothing but a slog. It completely feels like that the film has lost its path but surprisingly, the second half of the movie is lifted!
As soon as the intermission of the film gets over, the rock-solid ensemble of actors takes the screenplay to a higher level. The humor becomes sharper and the dialogues crackle. The main treason that this flick elevates so much after its first half is due to actors’ ability to do the best with the material they have, des[ite the writing is convoluted and contrived. Pankaj Tripathi is in its full glory even when he is in a cameo. He is tasked to make Deepak Dobriyal (Irfan’s cousin) and Champak Lal enter England illegally and the scene where this idea is discussed is genuinely funny. Mainly the dialogue where Pankaj says ‘Ye Koi Saree Shop Nahi Hai, Koi Aur Option Dikhao’.
Angrez Medium is a movie that also has Kareena Kapoor Khan portraying the role of a London cop. Her first encounter with Champak and his cousin is flat-out hilarious. She has done full justice to her part. The humorous relationship between these two brothers is packed purely for laughs but has undoubtedly its charm. There is no doubt that Irfan has done the heavy lifting in the movie but there is no denial that Deepak Dobriyal is one of the flick’s strength. Angrezi Medium is a movie where writers have also found space for ‘Mera Bharat Mahaan’ messaging
Despite having an uneven script, Ifan Khan has done an effortless job. Kudos to Radhika Madaan who managed to hold her own in the presence of great actors. Emotions are real and in the end, you will get teary. The flick deserves to be watched!
