If you are someone who constantly remains in touch with news about space, you would know that astrophysicists have been looking to capture an image of a Black Hole for a long time now. Now, after so many years of hard work, it seems like they have succeeded in their task. In this article, we will tell you every detail and pictures of the Black Hole which has been captured.
First of all, you should know that it is not just one big telescope which has captured the image. It has been a group effort. The image comes from the Event Horizon Telescope which is a network of 10 radio telescopes spread across the Planet and functioning as if it were a single receiver, one turned to high-frequency Radio Waves.
The image shows the boundary between light and dark around a blackhole, called the event horizon- the point of no return, where the gravity of the blackhole becomes so extreme that nothing that enters can ever escape.
The Super Massive Black Hole is located at the center of Messier 87, the largest galaxy we know of, about 54 million light-years away. The Black Hole is many times bigger than our sun and you can just about calculate how our Earth would look in comparison to the BlackHole.
To capture the image of the Black Hole, ETH Astronomers on four continents coordinated their efforts to make observations of the supermassive black hole. To perform the observation, the astronomers had to suffer from bad weather and glitchy electric grids. They donned oxygen tanks and climbed three-mile-high mountains to escape the interference of Earth’s atmosphere.
They then spent two years parsing truckloads of data which had to be shipped on hard drives from the South Pole and finally were transferred to a supercomputer facility at MIT.
They tested their findings against the results of a million simulations and finally found an image which brought them a match. In conclusion, we can certainly say that if Albert Einstein had lived to see the day, he would be really proud that his theory has been proved true with the image of a black hole finally getting captured.
