The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has announced the official contingent size across 15 disciplines will have 225 athletes and has also increased the number of quota places for Indian athletes in two disciplines namely, boxing and athletics in the event to be held from April 4 to 15 in Australia.
This move is welcomed from boxers and athletes but has led CGF reducing the number of quota places for the country’s athletes in other disciplines, most notably gymnastics, shooting and cycling.
For boxing, the request by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to the CGF was accepted and the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) increased the number of quota places for the Indian boxers. The CGF had originally reduced the entries to 10 from the allocated 13, leading to disappointment among Indian sports administrators, as boxing has fetched India impressive number of medals in the past.
Similarly, in athletics, the CGF gave seven more quota places from the original 30 to take the sport’s contingent size to 37, as compared to Glasgow’s 32.
For basketball, Indian men’s and women’s team directly added 24 quota places (12 men and 12 women) to the country’s contingent size. The CGF has extended ‘invitation’ to India for the Games. It’s after a gap of eight years that the basketball teams will play at the CWG. Basketball last featured in CWG in 2010 Delhi Games.
However in gymnastics quota was reduced from 10 at Glasgow to seven (2 men and 5 women) this time. This will further be reduced by a quota place as India’s biggest medal hope, Dipa Karmakar, won’t be able to mark her presence in the event due to injury.
Contingent break-up:
• Aquatics: Men 3, Total: 3. Athletics: Men 23, Women 14 (Total 37)
• Badminton: Men 4, Women 5, Total 9
• Basketball (qualification): Men 12, Women 12, Total 24. Boxing: Men 8, Women 4 (Total 12)
