JNU suspended PhD of Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid. JNU’s five members’ high-level inquiry committee has upheld Umar Khalid’s suspension and a fine of Rs 10,000 imposed on Kanhaiya Kumar in connection with the 9 February 2016 incident.

A Jawaharlal Nehru University five members’ panel had in 2016 recommended the suspension of Umar Khalid, Kanhaiya Kumar, Anirban Bhattacharya. University panel imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Kanhaiya Kumar. Jawaharlal Nehru University students’ union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar allegedly raised anti-national slogans in the university campus event against Afzal Guru’s hanging. Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and other students supported Kanhaiya Kumar for raising anti-national slogans. Five member’s panel committee had imposed a financial penalty on 13 other students for violation of disciplinary norms. JNU suspended PhD of Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid.

Suspended students had moved the Delhi high court, which had directed the university to place the matter before an appellate authority to review the panel’s decision. Committee reduced the financial penalty from some students. JNU five members’ panel has upheld its decision in the case of Umar Khalid and Kanhaiya Kumar. Anirban Bhattacharya, the third accused completed his PhD in 2017 and left the university campus.

Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were arrested in February 2016 on charges of encouraging people to fight against the government. Their arrest had triggered widespread protests.

Five member’s panel committee is keeping continuing the report of 11 April 2016 and submitted the report to university management. University management denied the fellowship of accused of raising anti-national slogans against Afzal Guru’s hanging.
