The much-awaited event of the year – Imagine’18 – the Department of Sociology’s Annual Academic Meet, was finally here, and it was one eventful day. Stories were told and ideas were exchanged, all in the spirit of this year’s theme — Voices from the Margins: Muslim Minorities. From gripping events to appetising food stalls, the day was filled with students and academicians from a variety of backgrounds, coming together and creating a refreshing atmosphere!
The morning started with the inaugural lecture by Ms. Ghazala Jamil, Associate Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, who spoke about Muslim minorities and their socio-political treatment in our country. She shared anecdotes from her experiences while writing and researching for her book ‘Accumulation by Segregation: Muslim Localities in Delhi’, and encouraged students to think more freely and openly in the thought-provoking question-answer round.
What followed next was an array of events, namely turncoat debate, spoken word poetry competition, paint-a-shayari competition, and expressions: open mic event. The online photography competition witnessed some very impressive entries, which testified the popular idiom ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’.
Each event saw a variety of participation of some very creative minds, inviting them to a platform that combined their talents with their interests, allowing them to be around like-minded people and express what needs to be heard.
Towards the end, there was a very captivating valedictorian address by Ms Shabnam Hashmi, a well known social activist and founder of a socio-economic organisation called ANHAD (Act Now for Harmony and Democracy). She spoke about Muslim identities and the importance of their voices, and about the state of causes such as secularism, human rights and communalism that prevail in our nation.
All in all, Imagine’18 was a huge success as the message which had to be conveyed was clearly conveyed to everyone present to witness the event. It is because of events like these, that our focus moves towards such problems that are always deeply buried under the voices of strong propaganda and political turmoil in the nation.
