The air quality in New Delhi is deteriorating at an alarming pace. The neighbouring states are also not far behind on the pollution scale. In view of the pollution caused by public transportation, the Delhi Metro brought in 21 additional trains on its network today. These trains will help provide 812 additional trips daily.
This includes 14 trains with 730 trips on Shiv Vihar – Trilokpuri – Sanjay Lake section of line 7. For the first time, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will be running as high as 4831 trips on a daily basis. This is the highest number of trips ever.
Only a day after being recorded as severe, the pollution levels went down to very poor. The overall air quality index was recorded at 366 by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA), appointed by the Supreme Court has urged the citizens of Delhi to maximize their use of public transportation. In order to reduce pressure on slightly polluting public transportation, the Delhi Metro brought in 21 additional trains.
According to a study, private vehicles contribute almost 40 per cent of the total pollution in Delhi and NCR. The EPCA has stated that for the first 10 days of November, the air quality will keep deteriorating. For the last two weeks, the fall in air quality has been quite serious. Authorities were forced to implement drastic pollution control measures. The government’s main strategy this year to reduce air pollution is to check and control the number of private vehicles on the road of the national capital.
