On Sunday, Novak Djokovic won his third US Open title. He triumphed over Juan Martin del Potro. This has made him equal to the mark of Pete Sampras with a total of 14 Grand Slams under his belt.

Noval Djokovic played his eighth final in New York on Sunday. He had previously won in 2011 and in 2015. He is now just three slams behind Rafael Nadal and six slams behind the all-time record of 20 set by Roger Federer.

The 31-year old Serb had missed his last tournament due to an elbow injury. This injury had brought about a mini-crisis in his career. But now, this is the third time that Djokovic has won the Wimbledon-US Open double.

It was a heartbreaking moment for Del Potro. He came in at second in the finals. This was nine years after he was crowned US Open champion before a long battle with wrist injuries pushed him into depression and to the brink of retirement.

This one was Novak Djokovic’s fifteenth win against del Potro. It was also his fifth win out of five grand slams.

This final was not at all thrilling. It was quite systematic. But it also came as a relief after the controversial women’s finals. With this slam, 50 of the 55 events have been won by the ‘Big Four’, namely Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

Del Potro from Argentina supported Djokovic and claimed that we will surpass Federer’s record. He said, “Of course he can. Novak has everything to make records in this sport.” He also added, “I was happy to be playing the final against this magnificent idol.”

This event not only marked the brilliance of Novak Djokovic as a professional tennis player but also glowed with the sportsmanship which was lacking in the women’s finals.
